Traditional Dentures: Tips to Follow to Easily Become Accustomed to It

Posted on December 25th, 2019

Hand holding denturesTraditional dentures are excellent options and a standard way of replacing missing teeth and improving the quality of your life. Oral discomfort is a part of life for many denture wearers, and they feel its normal. Getting used to wearing dentures takes a lot of time and patience.

Here at Lush Family Dental, we understand that adapting to your new dentures can be a challenge, but over time, getting accustomed to wearing dentures and overcoming the problems associated with adjusting to your new dentures will all be worth it.

Include us in your journey in getting used to wearing and living life with dentures with the tips we have prepared. Here are the following:

  • Practice reading out loud

It is perfectly normal to be unable to pronounce certain words or to lisp some of your words after being fitted for dentures. The cheeks, tongue, and gums will have to adjust to speaking around your new oral appliance. To return to your normal speech, reading out loud or practicing the words that slip you up over and over again is highly recommended.

  • Be wary when eating

When you start wearing dentures, it is often advised to start by eating soft foods or foods that are cut into small bite-sized pieces. Then, when you feel like you have already gotten used to eating with dentures, gradually include your usual diet.

  • You may experience some slippage

Our team at Lush Family Dental will ensure that your dentures are snugly fitted before you leave our office. However, it is only common for even well-fitting dentures to slip from time-to-time. This usually happens when you make an abrupt movement from sneezing, coughing, smiling, or even laughing. To correct slippage discreetly, gently bite down your dentures. Doing so will help you slightly adjust your dentures for a more comfortable fit without others noticing you.

  • Soak your dentures when not in use

Saliva plays a role in keeping natural teeth healthy. To avoid your dentures from drying out and fracturing, they must always be kept moist by soaking them in a glass of water or denture cleaner when not in use.
